Best to Skip Dating While Divorcing

In one of his most popular tunes, legendary vocalist Sam Cooke once lamented, “It’s another Saturday Night and I ain’t got nobody. I got some money ’cause I just got paid…”
That’s saddening stuff. But if you’re going through a divorce, going solo, rather than indulging in social activity that could be construed as dating, could make the proceedings in court go down in a much cleaner fashion.

From Maine to Hawaii, most lawyers, regardless of which side of the split is being represented, agree that it’s better for both parties to put their social lives and aspirations in the attic until the divorce is final and put on the books. Few would go the route of singer Christina Aguilera, who was reportedly living in the same house with her ex-husband, their son and her new boyfriend in Beverly Hills for weeks. Citing the well being of their kid, the ex was reluctant to move out of the house quickly.

Folks, do not try this at home. Some states look at pre-divorce romantic liaisons as adultery, and even if this isn’t the case, it wouldn’t be too hard to find a judge who’d look at this as untoward behavior or some form of skulduggery. Such would be particularly true in determining child support payment agreements, visitation rights or custody decisions.

Bottom line: dating can wait.
