Couple Bribe Judge in Child Custody Case
In the state of Texas, it has been reported that a University Park couple that was involved in a serious child custody battle paid $150,000 in bribes to the political opponent of a judge that was hearing their case.
David and Stacy Cary were involved in proceedings in a Collin County court and were fighting for child custody of David’s twin daughters from a prior marriage. The judge presiding over the case, Charles Sandoval, awarded primary custody to the girls’ mother and issued rulings that cost the Carys hundreds of thousands of dollars.
When Sandoval ran for reelection in 2008, the Carys allegedly paid $150,000 to the campaign consultant for Sandoval’s opponent, Suzanne Wooten, who outspent and beat her opponent.
On October 14th, the Carys, Wooten and the consultant were indicted. Each is facing charges of bribery and engaging in organized criminal activity which are felony offenses. It is said that Wooten took the money in exchange for a favorable ruling in the 380th District Court where the Carys were still hoping to get custody of the twins.
