Child Custody Fight Leads to Attempted Murder

In Weld County, Colorado, officers from the Evans Police Department say that a fight over child custody between two separate parents ended with gunshots being fired by the child’s father.

According to police, officers responded to a report of a disturbance on 37th Street at 2:30 AM.  The fight that broke out left two men with serious injuries and one of them is in custody for attempted murder.

24-year-old Leonel Crispin Chaparro-Duran went to the residence of his ex-girlfriend and tried to take their son when he became involved in a conflict with another man at the residence.  The fight escalated and the two men fought over a handgun that was produced after Chapparo-Duran threatened to kill the other man.

Police say that both men suffered injuries during the altercation which was witnessed by three other individuals.  Chaparro-Duran fled the scene of the fight before officers arrived but he was later located and taken into police custody.  Since that time, he has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, felony menacing, second-degree assault, disorderly conduct and prohibited use of a weapon.
