Are Couples with Daughters More Likely to Divorce?
In 2003, an interesting statistic was introduced to the public. The statistic stated that couples who have a daughter are 5% more likely to divorce than couple who have a son. Additionally, it was asserted that the likelihood of divorce only increases with each additional daughter and that couples who were unwed were more likely to get married if they discovered they were expecting a boy.
New York Times’ Lisa Belkin said that this statistic prompted many questions about why men would stick around for their sons, but not their daughters.
Now, an article from Psychology Today says that people are asking the wrong question as women leave men during 73% of all divorces. A psychology professor at the University of Notre Dame, Anita E. Kelly, argues that people should ask why mothers of daughters are filing for divorce more than mothers of sons. She offered an answer, saying, “When adult sons live at home, they add to the daily workload of their parents. When adult daughters live at home, they decrease the daily workload.” She also said that “females offer more and better social support than do men… an enormous human motivation is avoiding being lonely.”
